An 'African Green Revolution'

“Let us generate a uniquely African Green Revolution
– a revolution that is long overdue,
a revolution that will help the continent in its quest for dignity and peace

Tragically, the past has seen very little progress. For dozens of countries,
the Millennium Development Goal of halving hunger by 2015
seems more a far-off fantasy than an achievable target

[  Kofi Annan , Former UN Secretary-General : 2004]

A 'RECIPE' FOR FOOD SECURITY

“Nothing is so simple that it cannot be misunderstood !”
[ Peter Hughes : Farmer’s Weekly ]

Making a circle is very simple [ See R&D ‘Home Food Security’ ]

but in being multiplied and scaled up to become a commercial enterprise,

manuals are needed and available covering the many special ‘ingredients’

and instructions for irrigation, planting, protection and daily management

THE 12 PRIMARY CIRCLE CULTIVATION ADVANTAGES

The Circles and Root Irrigation System are permanent -resulting in :

1.    No high cost of equipment, fuel, chemicals. maintenance and storage facilities.

2.    Saving in Water up to 80% and crops irrigated only once a week
- at any time of the day  - and in any temperature

3.    Crops can be sustained without irrigation for up to six weeks

4.    A circle only needs to be dug Once - thereafter it is just maintained
– even by disabled or aged

5.    Savings in labour and costs for weeding, pest control, harvesting and
soil nutrients,

6.    The method can be scaled up - from subsistence to commercial farming

7.    Costs of production and profit are calculated per person per circle
– rather than per hectare

8.    Production and income are regular and continuous throughout the year

9.    No ploughing – so the environment and its biodiversity is not disturbed

10.  Circle is a mini-environment in which the soil structure and fertility is built up

11.  Individual ownership of circles – which resolves the failure of ‘collective farming’

12.  Extension services 24/7 are provided by Tele-cultivation

SCHOOL SELF-FEEDING SCHEMES

See R & D Information ITEM

The following are some additional advantages to schools, the learners and society :

1.    Nutritional produce improves brain growth -  therefore a better capacity to learn

2.    National budget reduced for Feeding schemes

3.    Income potential for other school activities

4.    Circle crops are sustained over vacations

5.    ‘One learner – one circle’ principle for personal responsibility

6.    Incorporation in standard curriculum “Life Skills” period per week.

7.    The following school subjects are introduced and practiced in the training process:

  • Geometry and Mathematics
  • Health and Nutrition
  • Horticulture
  • Soil science
  • Environmental conservation
  • Biology and Botany
  • Entomology
  • Physical exercise
  • Business skills

8.  Knowledge of the system taken back to homes to obviate hunger.
